Newcastle manager John Carver has warned Remy Cabella not to be disrespectful to his team-mates following his angry reaction to being substituted in their 1-1 draw with Stoke.
The French midfielder threw a water bottle in frustration when he was replaced by Gabriel Obertan during the second half of Sunday's game at St James' Park.
Carver admitted he was not unhappy to see Cabella’s frustration at being withdrawn but felt his reaction was unfair on Gabriel Obertan, the man who replaced him.
It's great to see someone react to being taken off the pitch, but there's a way to do that.
Cabella turned in an impressive performance, forcing a fine save from Stoke goalkeeper Asmir Begovic, but Carver was keen to rest him with other key matches coming up.
"It's great to see someone react to being taken off the pitch, but there's a way to do that,” said Carver.
"All I said to Remy, who threw his bottle on the floor, was, 'don't be disrespectful to the guy who's going on'.
"Gabby Obertan was going on, and don't be disrespectful. It could be the other way round in the future.
"I want all our players to be honest and hard-working. I just thought it was right to get him off the pitch, bearing in mind that we've got another game coming up.
"He did well in the game - he was very unfortunate with his headed chance - and I thought his contribution was excellent.
"I told him that (on Monday) morning. I had him in the office, and said 'look, you've been great since I've taken over - you need to continue that, but be careful with your reaction'."
