Schalke have completed the signing of Germany U21 international Johannes Geis from Mainz on a four-year deal.

The promising midfielder is currently in the Czech Republic for the European U21 Championship, where Germany take on the hosts on Tuesday night in their final group game.

Geis has 75 Bundesliga appearances under his belt, with six goals, and Schalke sports director Horst Heldt hailed their new signing.

"We are very happy that the most sought after player in the Bundesliga decided to join us," Heldt said in a statement.

"Johannes possesses enormous qualities. His ability at set pieces, his precise passing game and his vision of where his teammates are make him already one of the best pros in the league in the defensive midfield position."

Schalke finished sixth in the Bundesliga last season, with coach Roberto Di Matteo stepping down at the end of the campaign.

Di Matteo has since been replaced by Andre Breitenreiter, and Geis is excited about the plans for the club.

"Schalke fascinated me, the stadium, the fans," he said.

"Something new is being created at Schalke and I want to play my part."
