Steve McClaren expects things to happen towards the end of the transfer window

Newcastle remain hopeful of acquiring new players in the transfer window, according to manager Steve McClaren.

Summer signings Chancel Mbemba, Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic were all involved in the 2-2 draw with Southampton on the opening day of the Premier League season.

There were encouraging signs for the fans who had been in open revolt at the end of last season and they'll be hoping McClaren, managing director Lee Charnley and chief scout Graham Carr will be successful in their pursuit of more new talent.

QPR striker Charlie Austin appears to be at the top of the target list and McClaren said: "There's still a long way to go in terms of settling everybody down.

"There are a few who have been left out who are obviously not happy - and that's normal - and a few who have a bit to prove.

"Pre-season, the first game, another week's training - we are getting towards what we want to move on with, and still with two weeks to go, things will happen in the window. We will wait and see."

The ex-England boss inherited a squad in need of reinforcement and while some of the younger members have been loaned out, it is likely some senior personnel will also leave with defender Mike Williamson and striker Yoan Gouffran reported to be possible departees.

However, McClaren, who takes his side to Swansea on Saturday, insists no player has yet been told he is surplus to requirements.

He added: "No-one has been told anything. I have got my squad and I am pleased with that.

"The players are working hard - they are disappointed, obviously, if they are not playing, if they are not on the bench, and I understand, that's normal, we expect that. But they are being professional and carrying on with their jobs.

"There are two weeks of the window to go where a lot of things can change. Will they change here? I couldn't tell you yes or no. Just at the present moment, we will go on with what we have got."

Meanwhile, McClaren confirmed that striker Emmanuel Riviere has undergone minor surgery to repair a knee cartilage.
