Northampton Town's players and staff were not paid in October, the club has confirmed.

The Sky Bet League Two club, who could go second in their division if they win at Newport County on Saturday, were recently the subject of a winding-up petition by HMRC over £166,000 in unpaid tax, a claim which will be heard in the High Court on November 16.

Last week, a separate winding-up order against the company established by the club to oversee the development of the ground's east stand was upheld in Birmingham - it had been brought by the stand's builder, Buckingham Group, who claim to be owed around £3m for work done.

Former Oxford United chairman Kelvin Thomas is believed to be heading up a consortium which is interested in purchasing Northampton, with talks over the sale understood to be at an advanced stage, but the club's bank account has since been frozen and now wages have gone unpaid.

"Players are prepared for the game at Newport County as normal tomorrow," a club spokesman told the Northampton Chronicle & Echo.

"Obviously these are difficult circumstances for everyone, but we all remain committed and determined to stick together."

The spokesman went on to confirm that all of the players selected for the game at Newport County will travel as normal to the fixture.
