Police had to intervene in a football match in Argentina

Police were called into a local football match in Argentina following shocking violence between the two teams and fans.

Sunday's match between Club Parque Sur and Union FC of Totoras descended into chaos with spectators and coaching staff attacking players.

The game was halted with the Union team hit by rocks thrown by fans.

Violent clashes followed with one staff member appearing to punch one of the Union players, while flags were burned on the terraces.

Both sets of players were forced to flee the pitch as more objects were thrown. Police eventually arrived and helped to escort the players to safety.

Local media said that pepper spray was used to disperse the crowd. A spokesperson from Club Parque Sur said it was a "sad and embarrassing day for the club".
