Southampton held on to secure a 2-1 victory at Middlesbrough that moved Saints level on points with West Brom in eighth.

Puel's much-changed Southampton side secured victory on Teesside thanks to goals from Jay Rodriguez and Nathan Redmond.

However, the winning margin should have been far more comfortable, as Shane Long blazed a penalty over the top with Brad Guzan sent the wrong way.

That miss almost proved costly, as Patrick Bamford netted his first goal in over two years to get the home side back in it, but they lacked enough cutting edge to find that equaliser.
