Ryan Mayse was the hero for Dungannon Swifts as his double sent them to a 3-1 cup success against Ballymena United in the Northern Irish League Cup final on Saturday.

It was an historical achievement for Swifts as it was their first ever major senior trophy with the closest they came before being a penalty shoot-out defeat at the hands of Linfield in the 2007 Irish Cup final.

Mayse fired home a half-volley inside 11 minutes from Ryan Harpur's knock-down but their lead only lasted just six minutes when Kyle Owens headed home Leroy Millar's corner.

The Swifts were back in front through Mayse on 37 minutes as he took full advantage of a wonderful cross from Chirs Lowe. His original shot was kept out before reacting quicker than the United defenders.

That lead was doubled 10 minutes after the break courtesy of a fantastic long-range strike from Cormac Burke, who found space about 25 yards out and hit a strike into the far corner.
