Russia confirm 23-man squad for home World Cup

Russia have confirmed their 23-man squad ahead of their home World Cup, with head coach Stanislav Cherchesov cutting six players from his provisional list.

Former Chelsea player Yuri Zhirkov, CSKA Moscow trio Igor Akinfeev, Alan Dzagoev and Aleksandr Golovin and reported West Ham target Fedor Smolov are all included.

Sergey Ignashevich, the 38-year-old defender with 121 caps, makes the cut, as does Denis Cheryshev, who has recovered from injury in time to make the tournament.

However, Spartak Moscow due Giorgi Jikia and Aleksandr Selikhov, CSKA defender Viktor Vasin and Zenit St Petersburg striker Aleksandr Kokorin all miss out through injury.

The six players who drop out of Cherchesov's squad are Soslan Szhanaev, Aleksandr Tashaev, Fedor Chalov, Ruslan Kambolov and former German youth internationals Roman Neustadter and Konstantin Rausch.

Russia begin their World Cup campaign in the tournament's opening match against Saudi Arabia on June 14, before completing group A with games against Egypt and Uruguay.
