Belgium's Dick Advocaat claims he has been approached to become AZ Alkmaar manager on an interim basis.
Interim role with Dutch champions interests Belgium manager
Belgium boss Dick Advocaat claims he has been approached to become the new manager of AZ Alkmaar on an interim basis.
The defending Dutch champions sacked Ronald Koeman over the weekend after the summer appointment failed to match the standards of predecessor Louis van Gaal.
AZ are therefore looking for a new boss and technical director Marcel Brands appears to have identified former Holland manager Advocaat, who has been in charge of Belgium since the beginning of October, as the ideal candidate.
The 62-year-old is understood to have a clause in his contract with the Belgian Football Association which allows him to manage a club on an interim basis in a similar scenario to Russia boss Guus Hiddink at Chelsea last season.
Options
Advocaat has stated that he has been contacted by AZ and is considering his options, with
De Telegraaf quoting him as saying: "I was called by Marcel Brands on Saturday. I have a good feeling for AZ."
The ex-Rangers chief has stated that he was approached before Koeman's appointment, but he snubbed the permanent offer due to a promise to manage Belgium during their qualification campaign for the 2012 European Championship.
Advocaat, though, may be prepared to take charge of AZ until the end of the season to answer an SOS call after the club slipped to seventh in the Eredivisie following Friday's home defeat to Vitesse Arnhem.
"Last summer the club approached me to be head coach. I could not do it because I had given my word to the Belgian FA to lead the side to Euro 2012," he added.
"That is a challenge that I want to see through. But I wonder whether I could do some extra adventure. Therefore I am still not completely out."
