AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta could miss the remainder of the season if he decides to have surgery.

Veteran defender's resurgent season faces premature halt

AC Milan defender Alessandro Nesta could miss the remainder of the Serie A season if he decides to have knee surgery. The Italian legend ripped a tendon in his right knee in the goalless draw with Roma last weekend, in turn, ruling him out of the midweek defeat to Manchester United. Nesta's absence was all too evident as Milan were thumped 4-0 by the Premier League's reigning champions to send them crashing out of the UEFA Champions League second-round. Now the 33-year-old must decide whether or not to have surgery on the problem, as doing so would cost him a minimum of two months on the treatment table. "In the next few days, I will evaluate whether or not to undergo surgery," said Nesta. "Is my season over? I don't know. "Even if I were to undergo surgery I could still come back before the end of the campaign." The set-back is the latest in a long career hampered by injury but the veteran had previously enjoyed a good season in which he rejected the chance to come out of international retirement. Nesta joins fellow Milan defenders Luca Antonini, Daniele Bonera and Oguchi Onyewu on the sidelines as boss Leonardo prepares his depleted squad to host Chievo at the weekend.
