Sebastian Larsson is hoping both he and Sunderland can have a better campaign as his thoughts turn to the 2012-13 season.
Larsson was on Euro 2012 duty with Sweden in the summer and has had little time to reflect on a first season of ups and downs with the Black Cats.
The 27-year-old midfielder was part of the side that struggled under Steve Bruce but then played a key role in their winter revival under Martin O'Neill.
Although Sunderland's season ended on a flat note, Larsson knows the key is to start well if the team is to improve.
"I've not had much time to think about it but I want to progress," he told the club's
official website. "I know what was good and bad last season.
"Obviously we wanted to get off to a much better start as it's always tough when you don't begin the season well.
Confidence
"Hopefully we can get a good start and push on from there. If we can do that we know what we're capable of - a bit of confidence can really push us on.
"Even if I'm scoring a few goals, if the team aren't getting points then I don't take much satisfaction from that.
"There were periods during last season where my personal game was working well and parts where it wasn't.
"I always try to progress and improve every season and that's what I'm going to try and do this time."
