Former Manchester City and Brazil midfielder Elano says he is enjoying every minute of his Indian Super League adventure.

The eight-team league, featuring marquee names including Nicolas Anelka, Alessandro Del Piero, David Trezeguet and Robert Pires, has surpassed expectations in terms of interest and attendances in it its first month.

Elano is the competition’s top scorer with eight goals in six matches for Chennaiyin FC – the franchise co-owned by India cricket captain MS Dhoni.

And the former Galatasary and Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder is pleased he has been able to do his part to make the inaugural league a success.

“The project that was placed in front of me by the owners of Chennaiyin was a good one so I’m pleased I have been able to score some goals and show my skills for this team,” Elano told Sky Sports News HQ.

“When I see the happiness of the people that come to the stadiums it makes me so pleased to be in India. Playing football is what I feel I was born to do but also to bring smiles to the faces of the people so I’m really happy to be here.

“I’ve been surprised by the passion of the fans in India but also with the organisation of the tournament. The organisers have done so well to put this together in a short space of time.

“We must congratulate them because it is already a success and that makes me even happier. I’m proud to be here in the first edition of this league.”

Meanwhile, former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler and ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeicel will visit India next month for a Barclays Premier League Live event.

The Mumbai event will allow 24,000 fans in India to watch games on 380 sq ft screens, see the Premier League trophy, and participate in skills sessions with community coaches from top-flight clubs in England.

Premier League chief executive Richard Scudamore said: “We are very excited at the prospect of bringing Barclays Premier League Live to Mumbai to engage with fans of the League, and our clubs, in India.

“We know that fans around the world enjoy the passion and excitement on display when they watch our competition and we think this event will be the next best thing to being in the stadium on a match day.

“We are particularly looking forward to coming to India as interest in football is at an all-time high.”
