We look back at the top five highlights in the Premier League during the last 12 months.

Reds' late slip-up

It was all seemingly going so well for Liverpool and their inspirational skipper Steven Gerrard last season as the all-action midfielder went in search of his and the club’s first-ever Premier League title.

That is, until the captain’s unfortunate slip at home to Chelsea, followed by their blowing of a three-goal lead late on at Crystal Palace to all but extinguish their championship hopes.

The Black Cats do believe in miracles

Sunderland were dead and buried as last season reached its climax, with no one, barring their own loyal fans, giving Gus Poyet’s men a hope of surviving the drop, prompting some of the club’s long-suffering supporters to reveal a banner with a message proclaiming: “Believe in miracles”.

Incredibly, the Wearsiders then went on a remarkable late run that saw them draw at champions-elect Manchester City, before becoming the first-ever team to win a Premier League game at Chelsea in the Jose Mourinho era, and finally leaving Old Trafford with all three points.

Who said miracles cannot happen?

It's just champion for Kompany and Co

Manchester City’s title hopes looked to be over following a 3-2 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield in April, only for Manuel Pellegrini’s men to produce a late surge to pip the Merseysiders to the championship.

For the club’s captain Vincent Kompany, it was his second title win in the space of just three years, while for their Chilean coach, it was also his first championship triumph since moving to Europe from South America.

Super Suarez at the Double

Controversial Liverpool forward Luis Suarez had a sensational campaign up front for Liverpool last season, so much so that the Uruguay international was voted the double Footballer of the Year after scoring 31 goals in only 33 Premier League games.

However, sadly for the Reds it was the player’s last involvement with the club, with Suarez joining La Liga giants Barcelona last summer in a deal worth £75 million.

Theatre of Screams for Moyes

Hopes were high at Old Trafford at the start of last season that new manager David Moyes could continue the club’s recent domination of the Premier League under previous boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

However, it soon became apparent that the Scot was going to find it hard to replicate his compatriot’s success at the Theatre of Dreams, and with United even struggling to qualify for the Champions League, the club’s fans took to the skies to express their dissatisfaction with the new man at the helm.

And soon those in charge at United also made their feelings clear about the job Moyes was doing taking over from Fergie by parting company with the former Everton coach before the campaign’s climax.
