Team of the week
Game of the weekend
Arsenal 1 Manchester United 3
This clash lived up to the hype as United again humiliated Arsenal on their own patch. The Gunners started well enough but were, unsurprisingly, wasteful in front of goal. And the visitors made them pay as they broke the deadlock on 33 minutes after some sublime skill from Nani resulted in goalkeeper Manuel Almunia diverting into his own goal. Then four minutes later, the Red Devils delivered another hammer blow to the Gunners' title hopes. It was a stunning counter-attack almost identical to Cristiano Ronaldo's goal in the UEFA Champions League semi-final meeting last year, only Wayne Rooney finished off the move this time. Park Ji-Sung then put the result beyond any doubt as the home side were again punished on the counter, the South Korean, who was unchallenged, sliding past Almunia. Arsenal did restore some pride in the 80th minute via a deflected Thomas Vermaelen strike, but it was too little, too late.
Player of the weekend
Nani
Who could have predicted this player's rebirth back in December? Nani was hardly involved for United after he made some choice words to the press, yet he has now started the Red Devils' last three games. Not only has he started those matches, he has shone. And on Sunday against Arsenal the Portuguese had his 'best game in a United shirt', according to both him and manager Sir Alex Ferguson. His moment of pure genius on the ball which led to the opening goal deserved to result in his name being on the scoreheet, yet it will go down as an own goal. Nani gave left-back Gael Clichy a torrid time on the right wing throughout the encounter and his display more than merits this prize.
Goal of the weekend
Wayne Rooney
This was one of three terrific counter-attacking goals this weekend. Chelsea's superb opener, finished off by Nicolas Anelka, was a true delight while Park's strike at Emirates Stadium was made to look easy. Also, Gabriel Agbonlahor, who netted a brace for Aston Villa, is worthy of applause for his second goal at Fulham, which demonstrated quality technique as his curling effort nestled home in the far corner. However, Rooney wins this weekend's gong for rounding off a blistering move. The in-form striker picked up possession in his own half before playing in the brilliant Nani. The latter burst forward before rolling an inch-perfect pass into the feet of Rooney, who had busted a gut to get into the area, and was not tracked. The attacker then hooked the ball past the despairing Almunia with a low shot into the far corner. Breathtaking.
Pass of the weekend
Petr Cech
A little off piste this weekend with this prize-winner. Before the description and praise for the victor, some words for the runners-up. Tottenham's Luka Modric was at his creative best when he sought out Jermain Defoe with a heat-seeking through ball, while Javier Mascherano's raking ball that travelled miles before finding his Liverpool team-mate Steven Gerrard was excellent. Anyway, for Chelsea's first goal at Burnley, Cech received possession after a Burnley attack. The Blues keeper got his head up and saw Joe Cole lurking at the halfway line. He then distributed outstandingly with his hands, lobbing the ball a hell of a way to set Cole on a run into the Burnley half. The England man then pulled of a brilliant pass of his own, dinking to Florent Malouda before the move was rounded off by Anelka. All this thanks to quick thinking from Cech.
Controversy of the weekend
Mark Noble handball
This was a strong penalty claim and, had that been awarded, a case for a red card for said West Ham midfielder. Blackburn were looking to break the deadlock at Upton Park and a scramble in the Hammers penalty area almost resulted in a goal when Gael Givet diverted goalwards. The defender's effort spun towards the line, after catching a deflection, but Carlton Cole was there to hack clear off then line. However, on closer inspection, the ball appears to clip Noble's hand, which in turn meant Cole could deny Blackburn a certain goal. Referee Peter Walton did not see it.
Save of the weekend
Sotirios Kyrgiakos
There were not too many saves for the cameras this weekend, although Robert Green, Paul Robinson and Vladimir Stojkovic did pull off some excellent stops respectively. This winner, though, is Liverpool defender Kyrgiakos for his key, and excellent, goal-line clearance. Lee Chung-Yong looked set to hand Bolton a priceless advantage at Anfield when he slotted a ball past shot-stopper Jose Reina. The ball crept towards the line but Greek centre-back Kyrgiakos was swift to read the strike and he stretched well to hook the ball away from danger.
Miss of the weekend
David Ngog
Thinking about it, Ngog may have landed this infamous tag already this season. Anywho, the young Frenchman was presented with a gilt-edged chance to hand Liverpool a two-goal lead against Bolton when the ball dropped to him after keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen failed to keep hold of a Steven Gerrard shot. Ngog had the goal at his mercy but he directed his shot at the ground, meaning his effort bounced high before clipping the woodwork, leaving him with his head in his hands. Attention for Lucas too, after the Brazilian was all smiles - it was not really a laughing matter - after he managed to head off target from only a yard or so out.
Gaffe of the weekend
Anthony Gardner
What a shocker. Firstly, this could have all been prevented had Stephen Hunt just booted the ball out for a throw-in. Nonetheless, he did not. This meant Ronald Zubar was presented with possession and the Wolves man looked to bend in a cross. In went the ball and off it spun off defender Gardner. The deflection was wicked as it looped high, and amusingly (if you are not a Hull fan), over the helpless Boaz Myhill.
