Team of the week
Game of the weekend
Portsmouth 3 Hull City 2
Iain Dowie endured a debut to forget as his side were stunned late on against fellow relegation rivals Portsmouth. Dowie's bow as Tigers boss did at least begin brightly when Caleb Folan opened the scoring for the visitors at Fratton Park. But Tommy Smith restored parity as the forward turned in from close range. Folan, though, put Hull back in front in the 73rd minute with a cool solo goal, seemingly handing his side a vital three-point haul. But then a screamer from Jamie O'Hara put Pompey back level before a minute later Nwankwo Kanu guided the ball past Boaz Myhill to hand bottom-of-the-table a dramatic and welcome win.
Player of the weekend
Eidur Gudjohnsen
The Icelandic international rolled back the years as he inspired Tottenham to a huge victory at Stoke. The former Chelsea player entered the fray on 36 minutes after striker Roman Pavlyuchenko sustained an injury. And a minute into the second period, Gudjohnsen latched onto a looping through ball before surging in on goal and lashing home his first Premier League strike since January 2006 with aplomb. And, after Stoke had equalised, Gudjohnsen played a key role in assisting Spurs' winner as he cheekily stepped over a cross from the left to allow Niko Kranjcar to fire in.
Goal of the weekend
Jamie O'Hara
The on-loan Portsmouth player really does possess a tasty left foot. Indeed, with Pompey trailing Hull 2-1, O'Hara was presented with a chance to wave his magic wand after Jimmy Bullard gave away a free-kick in a dangerous position. O'Hara was then duly teed up before curling in an exquisite effort that dropped into the top corner, leaving Myhill with not a prayer. On the subject of excellent free-kicks, kudos to Everton's Mikel Arteta for his cracker against Bolton.
Pass of the weekend
Darren Fletcher
With the scoreline 1-1 at Old Trafford, Manchester United were pressing for a second goal to ensure their title charge remained on track. And Liverpool were undone on 60 minutes as United had possession on the right flank. Fletcher got his head up but his space in which to whip in a delivery was restricted by his marker Emiliano Insua. However, a buccaneering run from Gary Neville helped open the door ajar. Fletcher proceeded to execute a hugely inviting ball with pace that was placed in-between defence and goalkeeper. Liverpool simply could not deal with it and Park Ji-Sung popped up with a fine diving header.
Controversy of the weekend
Penalty calls
Another weekend of Premier League action and another catalogue of talking points. We start at the Emirates where Arsene Wenger felt Arsenal defender Thomas Vermaelen should not have been penalised for a challenge in the box, let alone been shown a red card against West Ham. And at Old Trafford, did Javier Mascherano not initially foul Antonio Valencia outside of the penalty area? Elsewhere, Wolves fans might argue that John Carew looked offside for both of his goals while at the Britannia Stadium, Stoke boss Tony Pulis was furious with referee Mike Dean for his decision to send off Dean Whitehead following what looked like a very harsh second yellow card.
Save of the weekend
Craig Gordon
The Scot enjoyed a marvellous outing for Sunderland as he frustrated Birmingham time and time again. Among the string of fine saves Gordon made, highlights include: a stop with his arm from Christian Benitez's header, a full-length stretch from a Stephen Carr strike and a save with his fingertips to deny Liam Ridgewell. In the same game, Joe Hart also pulled of a stunning stop when he got across to prevent Keiron Richardson from scoring. Also, credit to Burnley's Brian Jensen for an acrobatic stop and also Arsenal's Manuel Almunia for his fine penalty save.
Miss of the weekend
Several
There were some very poor misses on show this weekend. Let us start with Ricardo Fuller, who put over at Stoke when presented with a golden chance just a few yards out from goal. Birmingham's Cameron Jerome should also have done a lot better from six yards out as he failed to hit the target. Elsewhere, Everton's Leon Osman somehow hit the woodwork when he had the whole goal to aim at while Stewart Downing also spurned a great chance for Aston Villa at Wolves.
Gaffe of the weekend
Richard Garcia
A real head-in-hands moment this as the Hull midfielder switched off for just a second to gift Portsmouth their winning goal. With just seconds remaining, Garcia tried a short pass to his team-mate only for Nadir Belhadj to nip in and intercept. The Algerian swiftly darted down the channel before cutting back to the lurking Kanu, with Garcia a devastated onlooker.
