Peter Fraser reviews adidas' visionary adipower Predator, and is not disappointed

I'll be honest. My greatest footballing achievement to date was once being mistaken for Steven Gerrard by a pack of autograph-hunters at Liverpool's Melwood training ground (any excuse to tell that story). A showbiz tale, in my mind anyway, but what you can also read into it is that I never made progress beyond a gangly centre-back. adidas' iconic Predator was as a result always something worn by the more flamboyant and creative players. Something I looked on at in envy for years. But not anymore. After a glittering London launch in May, which was attended by the likes of Kaka, Nani and Robin van Persie, I finally managed to get my hands on the visionary adipower Predator and I was not disappointed. They are a bold and brave, yet brilliant, break from the traditional Predator image. In 'Sharp Blue/Electricity/Black' they quite simply look cool. In terms of comfort, Taurus leather provides optimum softness. There is also a significant degree of give in the outer-lining. I am a size 12, but a size 11 also proved a perfect fit. Although, those with a wide foot may be best to stick to their usual size. A 'Sprint Frame' design, which is also used in adidas' f50 range, means weight is reduced from previous Predators by 25 per cent to just 250grams. Such is the case, ahead of a weekend kick-about in one of the capital's parks, I had to check my bag to reassure myself that I had not forgotten the boots. The adipower Predator are without a doubt the lightest pair I have worn. Aided by a 'Powerspine' on the sole, plus a combination of studs and blades, this is more than noticeable when running. They hug your feet. It almost feels as if you are playing in your socks. That takes us onto the nitty-gritty, the trademark 'Predator Element', which is likely to be one of the main factors behind a recommended retail price of £155. This has been reengineered to 'maximise ball control abilities', say adidas. Silicon rubber on the instep is supposed to provide more power and spin in all weather conditions. I will always be slightly sceptical about the impact and I cannot say that I noticed any difference. But Xavi and Gerrard were among the players who contributed to the development, so what do I know?
