Southampton midfielder Dusan Tadic says the team will take some time to adapt to the diamond midfield formation favoured by new manager Claude Puel.

Puel signed a three-year contract in June after Ronald Koeman departed for Everton, but the Saints have taken only one point from their first two Premier League games.

A 1-1 draw at home to Watford was followed by a 2-0 loss at Manchester United last week and Tadic says the side are not happy with their display at Old Trafford.

"We are disappointed," he said. "I think we need to improve a lot of things.

"We should play much better. In everything, in defending together, in attacking together. Everyone, we need to be on a better level.

"In that, I mean first on myself and then everyone, and that's it."

However, Tadic also pointed out that Puel's installation of a diamond formation will take some time to become accustomed to.

Southampton manager Claude Puel hopes his side can learn from their defeat at Old Trafford

"This specific system, players didn't play so much," he said. "And then you need always to learn from that system and this needs time. We are still learning things from that system.

"The coach tries to explain to us and it's hard, it's difficult, but we still try our best to do good things."

The Saints are at home to Sunderland on Saturday and Tadic thinks a win there will set them on the path to another good season.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg felt Southampton dominated a lot during their loss against United but insists they must now analyse what they can do better

"We just want to see what is good and what is not good [from the United game], and try now to win the game against Sunderland," he added. "This is most important.

"It's important to win some games, then you get extra confidence and, for the rest of the season, you can do better things."
