Veteran Brazilian makes Eastlands move

Manchester City have bolstered their defensive options for this season after landing Brazilian left-back Sylvinho on a one-year contract. The 35-year-old former Arsenal man, who was out of contract after being released by Barcelona, will act as cover for first-choice full-back Wayne Bridge. Sylvinho brings Premier League experience to Eastlands having played two seasons with Arsene Wenger's side between 1999 and 2001. After leaving Arsenal he has spent the past eight years in La Liga playing for Celta Vigo and Barcelona.

Success

The defender, who has won six caps for his country, also brings success having won the UEFA Champions League twice and three Spanish titles with Barca. While Hughes has splashed the cash over the summer strengthening his squad, he is more than happy bringing in the defender without costing the club's hierarchy large sums of money. "Sylvinho has a wealth of experience at the very top level, having represented Brazil and played for some of the very top clubs in Europe," Hughes told the club's official website. "When the chance presented itself to bring him to Manchester City as a free agent I saw it as representing excellent business for us. "Sylvinho won the European Cup last season at Barcelona and he will strengthen our defensive options."
