Sunderland winger Will Buckley has insisted that he will prove himself if he is given the chance.

The 24-year-old joined the Black Cats from Brighton & Hove Albion in the summer transfer window but has started just once in the Premier League.

Buckley featured in Sunderland’s 2-1 home defeat by Stoke City in the third round of the Capital One Cup on Tuesday and gave a good account of himself.

After the game, manager Gus Poyet praised Buckley and hinted that he could retain his place against Swansea City in the Premier League on Saturday, and the former Watford winger is now itching to start at the Stadium of Light.

“It (Poyet’s comments) was good to hear personally, but we were all disappointed with the result against Stoke and not getting to the next round,” Buckley told the Sunderland Echo.

“The weekend is a bigger prospect for us now. Obviously I’ve come here and I want to play. I’ve been bought to produce.

“Hopefully I can get minutes in the Premier League to show that. All the players who haven’t been playing are eager to play.

“As fringe players, all we can do is prove we should be starting. Then it’s down to the manager who he picks.

“It’s the manager’s preference what he’s going to do on Saturday. I enjoyed Tuesday and hopefully I can produce even better performances than that.”
