London Mayor Boris Johnson is likely to meet Sol Campbell in the coming days after the former England international expressed an interest in politics.
The ex-Tottenham and Arsenal defender has ruled himself out of running for the Conservatives in May’s General Election, but believes his future is in politics.
Speaking at the launch of London Sport, a new not-for-profit agency with the aim to make the capital the most physically active Olympic city in the world, Johnson confirmed he was aware of the 40-year-old's ambition.
“I know of the rumours about Sol,” he said. “Obviously we’re very interested to see how that develops.
“I think Sol is coming to discuss sport and other things at City Hall, so maybe that will come up.”
Asked if he is likely to back Campbell in his quest, Johnson added: “I wouldn’t want to blight anyone’s political career by offering an endorsement, but I think he wants to come and talk about sport.
