Alan Shearer scored five times as Newcastle dismantled Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 at St James' Park in the 1999/00 season

It was Sir Bobby Robson's first home game as Newcastle United boss and Alan Shearer had a point to prove.

Shearer, left out of the starting line-up by Ruud Gullit for the last match at St James' Park, helped Newcastle chalk up their first win of the season in some style.

It was a five-star performance, matched by a five-goal display, to end a run of five months without a Premier League win. The 8-0 victory against Sheffield Wednesday left the home supporters rubbing their eyes in disbelief.

Andrey Arshavin delivered a serious blow to Liverpool's title hopes with a breathtaking four-goal haul as Arsenal produced a masterclass in counter-attacking football.

The game ended 4-4 in an encounter filled with plenty of entertainment and drama, with nearly all of the goals resulting from opponent mistakes.

The image of Arshavin wheeling away in delight with four fingers held up after netting his fourth - almost in shock at what he had just achieved - will live long in the memory of Arsenal fans and Premier League supporters beyond the Emirates.

Substitute Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came off the bench to score four goals in 10 minutes as Manchester Utd thrashed Nottingham Forest

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is revered as a Premier League great for his ability to come off the bench and produce a piece of magic when his team needed him most.

The Norwegian wasn't always comfortable with the tag of 'super sub' as he wanted to be viewed as so much more, but here Solskjaer highlighted just what an asset he was.

He scored four goals in a 12-minute substitute appearance to help Manchester United thrash Nottingham Forest 8-1 at the City Ground.

Mark Viduka single-handedly destroyed Liverpool with a four-goal blast in a thrilling encounter at Elland Road in the 2000/01 season

Leeds United went into their Premier League clash with Liverpool in a depleted state, with 10 first-team players injured. But, luckily for a vulnerable-looking back four, Mark Viduka was in the mood at the other end.

Viduka was under pressure to justify his £6m price tag following a move from Celtic, and he did that in some fashion with this four-goal salvo.

The Australian's physicality proved too much for Liverpool as they collapsed in the final 20 minutes of the match.

The Stretford end chanted: "He gets the ball and scores a goal, Andy Andy Cole."
