Manchester United are returning to their best following an "incredible turnaround" under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the Daily Mail's football editor Ian Ladyman told Sunday Supplement.

United's caretaker manager Solskjaer made it 10 Premier League wins from 12 as his side left it late to beat Southampton 3-2 on Saturday.

They leapfrogged Arsenal into fourth place, an achievement former manager Jose Mourinho claimed would be a "miracle" before he left the club.

Ladyman praised Solskjaer for reviving the United of old and despite Mauricio Pochettino's long-standing links with the full-time role, the Daily Mail man thinks it would be "startling" if the club did not reward the Norwegian.

He said: "It's Manchester United again, they create chances again, and lots of them all the time.

"Which you can't actually say about a Manchester United team going back three managers now, because none of the previous three played like that.

"He's done an incredible thing. It's been an incredible turnaround.

"I guess they do give him the job, but I it depends on how far they've gone with (Mauricio) Pochettino.

"If they were in a situation where Pochettino has said to them 'it doesn't matter what Levy says, I'm coming,' if that is the state of play, how can you turn that down?

"If that isn't the situation, and they want Mauricio but think it'll be a hell of a scrap to get him away from Levy, now they've got this incredible alternative and it would be quite startling if they didn't take it.

"They have to hope Solskjaer is equally adept at doing the other parts of a manager's job, to the parts he has done so far."
