Rooney shrugs off betting claims

Wayne Rooney believes his performance in the win over Arsenal answered doubters.

Wayne Rooney believes his performance in Manchester United's win over Arsenal proved that allegations of extravagant betting have not affected him.

The England international has been subjected to media reports suggesting he lost £700,000 while gambling on England duty.

But Rooney has refused to countenance the speculation and believes a goalscoring performance in United's 2-0 win over The Gunners did the player's talking for him.

"Look at my performance out there today and you can answer that yourself," Rooney told Sky Sports 1, after being asked if he was concerned over the speculation concerning his gambling habit.

Rooney was delighted by United's performance but was disappointed referee Graham Poll failed to award a penalty despite a handball inside the area from Kolo Toure.

"We had a nervy start but managed to create a few chances and we're happy with the three points," added Rooney.

"I'm sure if we didn't win the game that [the penalty decision] would have hurt a lot more - but sometimes you get decisions and sometimes you don't.

"But we're doing fantastically as a team. That's nine wins in a row and hopefully we can continue that."
