United winger delighted to receive award

Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo admits his rise to the top of world football has come ahead of schedule. The winger was voted player of the year in the FIFPro awards on Sunday, and he is line to collect the Fifa Player of the Year award and the Ballon d'Or for his performances last season. Ronaldo, 23, netted 42 goals in all competitions in 2007/08 as United won the Premier League and UEFA Champions League. And the Portugal international admits that his personal success has come as a surprise when considering his tender age. "I always believed in my talent," he said. "I am an ambitious player. I try to improve every season, not because I have to prove myself to anyone, just because I want to be the best I can be. "I did think that maybe I would become the best player in the world one day. "But I am still young and if I am being honest, I did not think I would reach this level so quickly."
