Veteran defender sustains calf injury

Gary Neville will miss Manchester United's pre-season tour of America after sustaining a small tear in his calf muscle. The veteran defender was set to play a part in United's preparations for the new season next month, but will now remain at the club's Carrington training ground base instead of flying out to Chicago on Monday. The 35-year-old's knock is thought to only be a minor setback and he will be rested to prepare for the start of the Premier League in August. It will come as a blow to the player after recovering from a series of injuries to finish strongly at Old Trafford after being offered a one-year extension to his deal as his career winds down. Neville joins England captain Rio Ferdinand on the treatment table, who was unable to play any part in his country's World Cup campaign after injuring his knee in their first training session before the tournament. United will face Celtic in their opening game of their tour in Toronto next Friday, with several first-team players, including new signings Chris Smalling and Javier Hernandez, joining the party.
