Winger says it won't be safety first in crunch clash against Basel
Ashley Young has stressed Manchester United will not be playing for a draw in Wednesday's crunch UEFA Champions League clash with Basel.
The Red Devils require only a point in Switzerland to secure progress to the last 16 of the competition and were held 3-3 at home by Basel earlier in the group phase.
Young, who scored a late equaliser in that game, feels it would go against United's principles to adopt a safety first mentality in trying to guarantee a spot in the knockout stages.
"It would be dangerous to think we only need a draw," said the England winger. "No one at this club has that mentality.
"We still have it in our hands to go there and qualify, which was the main target and we will be trying to win."
Confidence
The 26-year-old joined United from Aston Villa in the summer and he remains pleased with how he has settled into life with the Premier League champions.
"They don't come much bigger than Manchester United," he continued.
"I have always had confidence in my own ability and the club had enough confidence to sign me.
"I know quite a few players through England, so I settled in straight away."
Young may be asked to play in a central advanced role against Basel to support Wayne Rooney after Javier Hernandez added to United's injury concerns after suffering an ankle problem in Saturday's win at Villa.
It is a position Young played in for Villa, and has also undertaken for England, and he will have no qualms in taking up any role in the United side.
He added: "I don't have a favourite position. As long as I am in the team I am happy. The modern-day footballer has to be versatile."
