Rooney - United well positioned

Red Devils ace hoping champions can maintain pressure on City

Wayne Rooney believes champions Manchester United are well positioned in the Premier League title race. The Red Devils are two points behind Manchester City after beating Wolves last weekend, while the leaders lost to Chelsea on Monday. Sir Alex Ferguson's side take on promoted QPR this Sunday and Rooney is enthused by the possible prospect of being top next week. However, the England international knows it is a marathon, not a sprint, and it is important for United to maintain their good form.

Position

"We're two points behind (City)," he told The Sun. "Next week we could easily be top of the league. "I think we're in a great position. We just need to kick on and keep winning games, get a good run going and see how it goes. "There's still a lot to play for. A lot of people have said we have a good record at this time of year but, for me, they are difficult games. "QPR away, Fulham away - they're not easy places to go to and win because the fans are really tight. "It's a tight pitch too, so it's a difficult place to win. "We have to make sure we're not complacent and we go there fully focused and get the performance to get the three points."
Shock
Meanwhile, Rooney has expressed his shock and sadness at the death of Gary Speed, who he idolised growing up watching Everton. "I just thought he was a great player," he added. "I met him a few times. "I used to love the way he played, box to box - late runs into the box. He scored some great goals for (Everton). "I remember when he was at Everton. I got a rabbit when I was younger, so I named it after him. I named the rabbit Speedo. "It was such a big shock for everyone when we heard the news of his death. I don't think anyone saw it coming. It was a sad loss."
