Man Utd defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed he is targeting a move into management when he eventually calls time on his playing career.

Defender hoping to take up coaching when he retires

Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has revealed he is targeting a move into management when he eventually calls time on his playing career. Ferdinand was left out of Roy Hodgson's England squad for Euro 2012 to cast doubt over his international future but the 33-year-old said last month retirement is not in his thoughts. However, the defender says when he does eventually hang up his boots he would be keen on making the move into coaching. Ferdinand said in the Daily Mail: "As the months and years have gone by I think I have come round to the idea of doing some sort of coaching or being a manager. "Obviously I love football and all the tactics but I also think I would like the day-to-day responsibility of cajoling players and bringing the best out of them. "Man-management is so important these days. I think I would love that side of it."

Mentor

Ferdinand says he enjoys mentoring new players and would like to develop that skill in a coaching role. The defender added: "I remember what it was like when I first went into the England squad. It's hard going into any new squad, so I do try and help. "It can be frightening. It's always good to have someone looking out for you when you are new to it. "So, yeah, I suppose I try to do that and would like to develop those skills."
