Louis van Gaal has confirmed that goalkeeper David de Gea will not play for Manchester United in Friday night's game at Aston Villa

Louis van Gaal has suggested that Sergio Romero will keep his place in the Manchester United goal at Aston Villa on Friday night.

Romero started United's 1-0 win over Tottenham on the opening day of the Premier League season as speculation about David de Gea's Old Trafford future continues.

Van Gaal refused to play the 24-year-old in last weekend's game, stating that the Spain international goalkeeper could not focus because of the rumours linking him with a move to Real Madrid.

"No, it's the same situation," said the United manager, when asked if De Gea would feature against Tim Sherwood's side, live on Sky Sports.

"At home, we were were one of the best, third in the league I think," said the former Ajax manager.

Why Louis van Gaal's managerial legacy at Manchester United hinges on what happens this season.

"Our aim is always to improve the squad and when it is possible, we shall do it," said the Dutchman.

"I have said more than once that we only buy when we think a player can make a contribution to our squad."
