David de Gea could start in goal for Manchester United against Liverpool on Saturday Night Football, manager Louis van Gaal has revealed.

The 24-year-old, whose protracted move to Real Madrid broke down in sensational fashion on Spain's deadline day, signed a new four-year contract at Old Trafford on Friday.

And ahead of United's huge clash with Liverpool on Saturday Night Football, Van Gaal said: "You shall see if he plays - you never know. We have to judge him in training."

Van Gaal admitted he was delighted De Gea decided to stay with the club and said he never discounted the possibility of the Spaniard remaining at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal has confirmed that he always hoped David de Gea would stay at the club

"Yes because it is confirmation of what I am always saying, that transfers are a process," said the Dutchman.

"I had hope until the end, despite all the media writing that he was going to Real Madrid. I didn't want to sell him and we didn't sell him and now he is here.

"I am very happy that David De Gea is staying because I believe he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. He was my best player last year, not only chosen by the fans, but also chosen by his fellow players. It is a happy end."

Asked what he thought when he first heard De Gea's move to Real Madrid had fallen through, van Gaal replied: "I never think. I let the information come to me and then I make an analysis so I asked Ed (Woodward, United's executive vice-chairman) if it's true that Manchester United sent the papers too late. He said no and that the federation wants to make a declaration (to that effect).

"For me that information was sufficient and I could only think that David De Gea had to suffer. That is what I thought but it is the world of football. It is a crazy world and I cannot change that crazy world."
