Blues midfielder out to make up for Wembley heartache

Michael Ballack is determined to lead Chelsea's defence of the FA Cup after missing last season's Wembley win. Ballack missed the 1-0 triumph over Manchester United after undergoing ankle surgery in April and only made his comeback two weeks ago. The German midfielder figured in three matches during a successful Christmas schedule at Stamford Bridge, scoring two goals in the process. His comeback continues in Saturday's third-round tie against QPR and he is eager to help Chelsea retain the trophy. "The game against QPR is important for us. We play at home so we are favourites and we want to reach the next round," he said. "Of course I was disappointed to miss the final last year. But I can't change the things that have happened. "I got my injury but now I'm looking forward to having a run in the side. I hope we reach the final again and that I can play. "I was in the stadium for the final last season and it was a good feeling, especially as it was the first game at Wembley. "It was a big atmosphere in this unbelievable stadium with so much history and I could feel the importance of the competition. "In England the FA Cup is very, very important and maybe it doesn't compare with cup competitions in other countries, so it was new to me."

Treatment

Ballack was in the treatment room when Jose Mourinho was replaced by Avram Grant in September. So far Grant, a relative unknown until his appointment as Chelsea boss, has made encouraging progress in keeping the Blues snapping at the heels of the Premier League top two. Ballack insists he has nothing to prove to the Israeli, despite taking the first steps in his comeback from a lengthy lay off. "There's nothing I have to show the new manager," he said. "I worked very hard when I was out. It's always a difficult time when you're injured but I'm looking forward and at the moment things are good."
