Italian tactician knows experienced midfielder will adapt with age

Chelsea interim boss Roberto Di Matteo has refuted suggestions veteran midfielder Frank Lampard is entering a period of decline. The 33-year-old has been a lynchpin in the Blues midfield for over a decade but some feel his importance for the team is diminishing. Di Matteo does not believe age is a factor having seen Paul Scholes' impact at Manchester United, stating health and fitness are the key attributes he focuses on. The Italian boss feels Lampard will adapt his game as time progresses and that he has the intelligence to ensure he continues to be an important cog in Chelsea's machine.

"I wouldn't say he's entered a declining stage," Di Matteo said of Lampard. "What I can say from my own experiences is that you probably need a little bit more time to recover when you get to a certain age. "Apart from that, if you're healthy and fit, you can reach high levels. "Paul Scholes is not bursting forward as much as he used to do. But Frank's an intelligent guy, so he will adapt very quickly to that. "I have no problems with age if somebody is healthy and fit. He's a top professional. I think this club has been blessed to have a player like him for 10 years."
