Daniel Sturridge faces another spell on the sidelines after injuring his hamstring during Liverpool's defeat at Newcastle, Sky sources understand.

Sturridge had a scan on the injury on Tuesday and has been diagnosed with a 'strain' that will keep him out for a number of weeks and could see him miss the busy Christmas and New Year programme.

The England striker had only returned to the starting line-up, and scored twice, against Southampton in the Capital One Cup last midweek.

He dropped down to the bench at St James' Park on Sunday and came on for Roberto Firmino, but his 28 minutes on the pitch appears to have cost him more time out of Jurgen Klopp's plans.

Sturridge missed the start of the season after having surgery on his hip, and he has had issues with a foot and his knee since Klopp's arrival at Anfield.

His absence leaves Liverpool light of options up front, with only Christian Benteke and Divock Origi fully fit among their out-and-out strikers - summer signing Danny Ings is likely to miss the rest of the season with a knee ligament injury.
