Liverpool introduce £40k-a-year salary cap for academy players, according to Sky sources

Sky sources understand Liverpool have introduced a salary cap of £40,000 a year for their academy players.

With younger players at other leading clubs already on contracts worth millions, it is believed Liverpool are taking this stance to prevent their stars of the future earning too much, too soon.

However, despite the pay cap for 17-year-old players, it is understood Liverpool's youngsters will be able to earn more for U23 appearances and first-team promotions either at Liverpool or while out on loan.

Liverpool refused to comment on players' salaries when contacted by Sky Sports.
