Stuttgart linked with Henchoz move

By Thomas Zeh
Stuttgart are considering a move to lure Liverpool defender Stephane Henchoz back to the Bundesliga, according to reports in Germany.

The Swiss international will be out of contract next summer and Stuttgart coach Felix Magath is weighing up an offer for the 29-year-old.

Magath knows all about Henchoz from their time together at Hamburg, and is keen to strengthen his central defence and might even stage a bid to bring in the player during the winter transfer window.

The Stuttgart coach is scouring the market for a new defender as he is short of options with Portuguese star Fernando Meira and Brazilian Marcelo Bordon, who is out for the rest of the year due to injury, their only international class defenders.

Magath is determined to build on Stuttgart's success this season by turning them into a major European force and is thought to be keen on being reunited with Henchoz.

The former Blackburn stopper has struggled with injuries this season making just six first team appearances and he could face a struggle to get back into the side with his deputy Igor Biscan performing well in defence.

Any moves looks unlikely though as Reds boss Gerard Houllier has insisted he does not want to lose any of his top players and he would be loathe to break up the successful partnership of Henchoz and Sami Hyypia in the centre of Liverpool's defence.
