Honours even at Norwich

Premiership newcomers Norwich and Crystal Palace shared a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.

Premiership newcomers Norwich and Crystal Palace shared a 1-1 draw at Carrow Road.

It was a tale of the two strikers as Andrew Johnson cancelled out Darren Huckerby's first half opener.

Both men had superb games and could have had at least a couple of goals each, and they may hold the key to both sides remaining in the top flight.

City and Palace produced good spells throughout the game - and both sets of supporters will be going home with hope that they can give a good account of themselves this term.

Palace's new singing Sandor Torghelle looked up for it early on and was a real threat on the Norwich goal in the opening exchanges.

The Hungarian marksman shot just wide within the first ten minutes to signal his intent, and he was a real handful.

City quickly got themselves into the game though, and Huckerby gave them the lead on 16 minutes as he muscled his way past Mark Hudson to power into the box.

With Palace appealing for a free kick, Huckerby had plenty of time to line up a shot and he made no mistake when firing past Julian Speroni in the visitors goal.

Palace came back into matter towards the end of the half but could not trouble Robert Green with Torghelle and Michael Hughes going closest.

Torghelle battled his way into the box just minutes into the second half, but Green came out bravely and the striker's shot struck the keeper in the face as he slid out.

Green had another scary moment on 50 minutes when he fumbled the ball inside his own box leading to a goalmouth scramble that Simon Charlton had to sort out.

Huckerby looked in great form, and he forced Speroni into a fine one-handed save after twisting and turning into the box.

Palace had begun to grow in stature, and their improved display resulted in an equaliser that was inevitably scored by their prolific striker Andrew Johnson.

Wayne Routledge dinked a lovely ball through to the former Birmingham man, who controlled the ball before tucking it past Green with an instant finish.

Huckerby went close again in the latter stages as the hosts pushed forward for a winner, with his volley well held by Speroni.

Johnson could have had the last word, however, as he also produced a superb volley that Green had to gather at the second attempt.
