Spanish striker hurts groin in World Cup final
Liverpool will find out the full extent of Fernando Torres' groin injury later in the week.
The 26-year-old Spain striker sustained the injury in Sunday's World Cup final victory over Holland after coming off the bench to replace David Villa in extra time.
Torres pulled up sharply after chasing a ball forward and the problem has been confirmed as a left adductor injury.
He will undergo a further medical examination in the next few days, having recently returned to Spain as the country celebrates their World Cup triumph.
Torres has an uncertain future and speculation has linked him with a move away from Anfield following a disappointing season last time out.
Under the stewardship of Rafa Benitez, Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League and crashed out of the UEFA Champions League in the group stage.
Benitez has now left the club to take over at Inter Milan, while his replacement, Roy Hodgson, insists he wants to keep Torres on Merseyside.
The star forward was plagued by injury last term and, having struggled with a groin problem before Christmas, he ended up having two operations on his right knee within the space of four months which ended his Liverpool campaign prematurely.
His latest injury may go some way to calming speculation about his future, with a number of big clubs reportedly eyeing his situation closely.
