Captain Gemma Bonner has signed a new contract with Liverpool Ladies.

The central defender played a crucial role in the team's Women's Super League title success in 2013 and was an ever-present as they defended their crown this season in thrilling fashion thanks to a final day win over Bristol Academy.

Bonner, who joined Liverpool from Chelsea Ladies in 2012, said: "I am absolutely delighted to have signed a new contract with Liverpool Ladies.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here and I'm sure we can win many more trophies over the next few seasons.

"The team spirit here is brilliant and, in my opinion, was the main reason why we managed to retain the Women's Super League title last season.

"The prospect of competing in the UEFA Women's Champions League again is also an exciting one and I cannot wait for the season to restart."

Bonner worked with Liverpool coach Mark Beard at Chelsea, and he is delighted to keep hold of one of his side's key players ahead of their bid for a WSL hat-trick.

He added: "She has been one of the key reasons for our success over the last two seasons and her new deal is a key one for the club.

"Not only is she a leader with her performances on the pitch, but she leads by example off the pitch and is well respected by her fellow teammates."
