Liverpool sponsor Dunkin Donuts have angered a number of fans after posting an edited version of the club crest on social networking site Twitter.

The Shankly Gates at the top of the crest were replaced with images of the company’s doughnuts, ‘You’ll Never Walk’ Alone was changed to 'America runs on Dunkin', while plastic cups were inserted in place of the Hillsborough flames.

The illustration, which also featured the company logo in place of the famous liver bird, was accompanied by the message: “Love the LFC crest? Tweet us what you’d want on your personal crest and we might surprise you with your own!' #LFCReDDs

Dunkin Donuts, who became Liverpool's official coffee, tea and bakery provider at the beginning of last year, deleted the tweet and made a formal apology after a furious response by some fans.

A Dunkin Donuts statement read: ”We apologise for any insensitivity regarding our tweet supporting an LFC-themed promotion featuring the LFC crest.

“As a proud partner of LFC, we did not intend any offence, particularly to the club’s supporters. We have removed the tweet and halted the campaign immediately.”
