Wenger coy on Becks talk

Arsene Wenger has played down talk of a summer bid for David Beckham.

Arsene Wenger has played down talk of a summer bid for England captain David Beckham.

The rumour mill cranked into gear over the weekend when Wenger was quoted as saying Beckham would fit into his plans at Arsenal.

With doubts hanging over a number of players at Real following the departure of Florentino Perez, Wenger's comments prompted talk of a summer raid on the Bernabeu.

Wenger was asked to clarify his position on Beckham following his side's 2-1 win over Liverpool on Sunday and although admitting he is a fan of the England skipper, the Frenchman is more concerned with ensuring his young stars flourish in North London.

"I rate him as a player but it doesn't mean we want to sign him," Wenger stressed to Sky Sports News.

"I'm more interested in keeping the players we have here because I am very happy with them.

"I am ruling out any signing at the moment because I have a lot of young players to come through - and they will be very, very good."
