Arsenal manager slams hypocritical Chelsea
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has accused Chelsea of hypocrisy following their heavy spending on transfer deadline day.
The Blues paid out over £70million on Monday to bring Liverpool striker Fernando Torres and Benfica defender David Luiz to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea had earlier revealed their latest financial results, which showed a £70million annual deficit.
Wenger cannot understand how his Premier League rivals can justify such an outlay after backing Uefa's new rules regarding financial fair play.
European football's governing body has grown concerned by the financial problems affecting the game and from 2014/15 clubs will not be allowed to spend more than they earn over a three-year period.
Wenger said: "Chelsea supported financial fair play. But in the morning they announce a £70m loss and in the afternoon buy £75m worth of players. Where's the logic in that?"
No man's land
Wenger accepts that Chelsea's business this week demonstrates Roman Abramovich's commitment to strengthening the squad after a couple of years without many major signings.
"For a while, Abramovich was a bit in no-man's-land whether nobody could really guess whether he wanted to still invest or not," said the Gunners boss.
"Certainly, that has changed. He's decided to put big money in and that tells you more will come in the summer."
Wenger does not necessarily believe that Torres was overpriced at £50million, considering what he has achieved at international level with Spain.
He said: "They bought a great player who won the World Cup and Euros. After that it's down to how much you're willing to pay for a player.
"They have the financial potential to do it."
