Dutchman given chance to break record, but could then be rested
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has confirmed Robin van Persie will play against QPR and be offered the chance to break Alan Shearer's goalscoring record, but he could then be rested against Fulham.
The Dutch striker has scored 34 Premier League goals in 35 appearances in 2011 and needs just two more to equal the total set by the legendary Alan Shearer in 1995.
Van Persie will have the chance to surpass that record when Arsenal host QPR on New Year's Eve, but the Gunners captain will then be assessed to see if he needs to sit out the trip to Fulham on Monday.
"It will be difficult," said Wenger on Friday. "He will play tomorrow, then we will assess the situation with him on Sunday and Monday morning and make a decision.
"I don't rule it out, but he's one of the players who has played a lot and you see again, against Wolves on Tuesday, he's the guy who gives absolutely everything in every game at the moment.
"He knows, 'I have to score', so he's always on the fringe of pushing himself. Let's hope he can get through the next two games."
