Everton's title-winning U23 side lost 2-1 against their city rivals Liverpool at Goodison Park on Tuesday night.

The Toffees, who wrapped up the Premier League 2 crown at the end of April, were behind when Sheyi Ojo opened the scoring for Liverpool in the sixth minute, capitalising on some poor defending to net past Mateusz Hewelt.

It was 2-0 early in the second half through Reds full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, who scored from an angle on the counter attack as David Unsworth's side pushed forward.

Substitute Calum Dyson pulled one back in the 83rd minute, and though Liverpool held on for the victory, Everton went on to lift the silverware in front of their own fans.

"I'm immensely proud," Unsworth told the club's official website, despite Liverpool pooping the title party on the pitch. "We were disappointed to lose the game, but when you look at the season as a whole, I am very proud of this group of players.

"It was a great moment to see the lads lift the trophy at Goodison. It was a great evening but we're sorry we couldn't get the result we all wanted for all the fans who came out this evening.
