Duo win monthly awards for first time
Wigan boss Roberto Martinez and Everton striker Nikica Jelavic have won the Premier League Manager and Player of the Month Awards for April.
Martinez guided Wigan to three wins from their five games in April, a run of results that lifted them three points clear of the bottom three and onto the cusp of safety.
They began the month with a last-gasp 2-1 defeat at Chelsea but followed that up with famous wins over Manchester United and Arsenal.
Another last minute defeat at Fulham followed before the Lancashire club wrapped up the month with a 4-0 thrashing of Newcastle at the DW Stadium on Saturday.
It is the first time Martinez has won the award since joining Wigan in July 2009.
Jelavic, meanwhile, was in fine goal-scoring form for David Moyes' Everton during April.
Brace
The £5.5million January signing from Rangers scored six goals in the three league games he played during the month, most notably at Old Trafford, where he bagged a brace in a dramatic 4-4 draw.
He also scored both goals in the 2-2 draw with Norwich at the start of the month and two more in the 4-0 win over Fulham at Goodison Park last weekend.
"I am really pleased to have won the Barclays Player of the Month award," said Croatia striker Jelavic. "Everyone at Everton has been very good to me since I arrived at the club and I am glad that I have been able to reward the fans for their fantastic support.
"Awards are always nice and this one shows how well the team is doing just now. We are playing some great football and we are creating chances, which for a centre-forward is obviously very important.
"We are finishing the season really well and we hope to end with two more wins from our last two games."
