Two Darren Currie goals strengthened Ipswich's position at the top of the table.

Currie put Joe Royle's side ahead from the penalty spot after Paul Wotton fouled Darren Bent and then volleyed in Jim Magilton's cross to double their advantage. Micky Evans pulled a goal back late on for Argyle.

Former Sunderland striker Darren Byfield set up Darius Henderson to give Gillingham a surprise lead at The Stadium of Light, although Chris Brown hit back as Sunderland earned a 1-1 draw.

Like Sunderland, Reading also missed the chance to move into second place as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Derby County. Tommy Smith scored the only goal in first half stoppage time.

Preston are three points adrift of the play-off places after goals from Chris Sedgwick and Brian O'Neil, who was later sent off, gave The Lilywhites a 2-1 victory in the evening kick-off at in-form Crewe. Richard Walker scored a late consolation for Dario Gradi's side.   

West Ham's promotion bid suffered another blow as they were beaten 2-0 at home by Sheffield United, with Leigh Bromby following up a Tomas Repka own goal for Neil Warnock's side.

QPR went down to an eighth consecutive away defeat at Leicester, where David Connolly's penalty was enough to give Craig Levein's side all three points.

Leeds had Clarke Carlisle sent off, but held on to win 2-1 at Coventry. Nathan Blake scored his first United goal and David Healy put them two ahead, before Gary McSheffrey grabbed a consolation for City.

Promising defender Gary Cahill scored the only goal as Burnley won 1-0 at Stoke, while Leon Knight's winner boosted Brighton's survival hopes as they came from behind to beat Watford.

Heidar Helguson's 13th goal of the season had given The Hornets the lead, but Kerry Mayo quickly equalised before Knight's second half strike.

Cardiff eased their relegation concerns by beating fellow strugglers Nottingham Forest 3-0, with Peter Thorne scoring his side's first two goals. Forest's Jon-Olav Hjelde was sent off before Graham Kavanagh completed the scoring.

Bottom club Rotherham secured their third win of the season, coming from behind to stun Millwall at The New Den.

Alan Dunne had put the Lions in front, but Martin Butler equalised before Rob Scott scored to give The Millers all three points.
