Ghana have formally asked Fifa to switch the nationality of Kevin-Prince Boateng from German to Ghanaian.
The 23-year-old Portsmouth midfielder has been capped eight times for Germany's Under 21s, but has decided to switch allegiance.
Boateng was born in Germany to a Ghanaian father, and the African side are weighing up the option of naming him in their World Cup squad this summer.
Ghana FA vice-president Fred Pappoe said: "We have been in regular touch with Kevin and he understands we want this to happen, the coach (Milovan) Rajevac is keen on him and we were the ones who initiated this process."
Ghana have been named in Group D of the World Cup in South Africa - the first time the competition will be held on African soil.
Indeed, Germany are actually in the same group and if selected, Boateng could face his brother Jerome who has featured in three of Germany's last four international matches.
The other teams in Group D for the showpiece tournament are Serbia and Australia.
