Defender fails to win a deal at Fratton Park

Portsmouth manager Steve Cotterill has opted not to sign Spanish defender Fernando Vega following a trial. The 27-year-old, who played 115 times in five years with Real Betis, turned out for Pompey in a friendly against FC Rostov at Fratton Park. However, Cotterill admits he will not be pursuing his interest in the full-back. "He just came in for a couple of days' training and we had a look," Cotterill told the Portsmouth News. "He got released by Real Betis and it was just a chance for us to have a look at him." Meanwhile, Cotterill is pleased to welcome back Luke Varney for the weekend's clash with Barnsley, adding: "We know about his pace and we've missed not having him around."
