Spurs playmaker looking to build on European run
Luka Modric believes Tottenham can build on their successful UEFA Champions League campaign and enjoy a bright future.
Spurs' European adventure looks set to come to an end at the quarter-final stage, barring a miraculous comeback in Wednesday's second leg against Real Madrid.
Having lost the first leg 4-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu, Harry Redknapp's men will still be able to take great pride from their long run in the competition if there is no fairytale ending.
And Modric believes Tottenham can push on next season and try to challenge for the Premier League title.
"We are close [to winning something]," he said. "In front of us is a bright future if we stay together.
"We need to take positives from this year and from the Champions League also, and try to put that into next season.
"We need to learn from mistakes and try to fight for winning the title, but the Premier League is not easy.
"It's the best competition in the world and it's not easy to win it. You have a lot of great teams: Man United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal.
"There are a lot of rivalries and it's not easy but we have a bright future and why not, in the next years try to win something? League or FA Cup or something like that."
Long contracts
Tottenham currently lie fifth in the Premier League, with three points separating them from Manchester City in the final Champions League berth.
With games running out, Spurs may end up plying their trade in the Europa League if they cannot usurp City but Modric insists such an outcome would not result in players departing.
"We enjoyed it this year playing in the Champions League but a lot of players are still with long terms on their contracts and no-one is thinking about [leaving]," he said.
"We are all thinking positive and that we will manage to qualify for Champions League next year and that's it.
"We don't have that on our mind, if we don't qualify. We are only thinking positive how we will qualify again."
Redknapp has insisted he will not be forced to sell his top players if Spurs do not secure a top-four finish, and Modric has backed his manager's stance.
"We all have long contracts at the club and it doesn't matter if we qualify or not qualify, I think the team will stay together," he added.
"But, like I said, no-one's thinking about that. We are all thinking positive and that we will qualify for Champions League again.
"But even if not, it's possible, but no-one is thinking to leave Tottenham.
"We are happy here and we are enjoying Tottenham. It's a big club and that's it."
