American adamant he is not at White Hart Lane for the money
Brad Friedel insists he has not joined Tottenham for one last payday and has warned Heurelho Gomes he wants the No.1 jersey.
The 40-year-old American moved to White Hart Lane last week on a two-year deal after leaving Aston Villa.
Liverpool also wanted to re-sign Friedel, but the shot-stopper did not want to act as back-up to Jose Reina and instead chose UEFA Champions League hopefuls Tottenham because he wants to be first choice.
He said: "I like what I heard coming out of Tottenham, they are a club on the up and it's well documented that had I moved to Liverpool it would have been as a No.2.
"I just felt that if I was to sign anywhere as a No.2 that would effectively be signing my retirement.
"I didn't sign anywhere for the money, I signed to play and the chance to compete for my place with the exciting players."
Friedel, 40, added: "I really feel Tottenham have the chance to get into that top four. I hope to be in the starting 11."
