Steve Kean said the Blackburn dressing room was "a little bit flat" after sharing a point with Birmingham.
Junior Hoilett's equaliser in injury time of the first-half was enough to claim a point at Ewood Park in a tense encounter between the 14th and 15th-placed sides.
Lee Bowyer had earlier put the visitors ahead, but Kean was pleased with his side's second-half response and said the players felt they could have got more out of the game.
"I think if you feel the atmosphere in the dressing room it's a little bit flat from last week when we were very buoyant after getting a point at Arsenal," he told
Sky Sports.
"But you look at the other results and things went well for us in other games so I suppose we're making small steps instead of giant leaps.
"Sometimes you've got to respect a point and I thought we did really well second-half because we couldn't really get into a rhythm in the first half.
Tempo
"It was a stop-start game and we never really got into a tempo like we did against Arsenal.
"But we got a very good goal from Junior Hoilett just before the break and I thought second-half we edged it.
"We were looking to take a leap and get really close to top ten as it happens we're chipping away with points.
"We stuck together and we dug something out of a game which might have slipped away from us."
Injuries
Throughout the game several players required treatment with Rovers' influential centre-back Ryan Nelsen coming off early on and Christopher Samba nursing a damaged ankle after falling awkwardly in an aerial challenge with Cameron Jerome.
Goalscorer Hoilett was also shaking his head when he came off in the second-half after a tight hamstring prevented him from continuing following an impressive performance.
But despite the injuries, Kean believes he should have a near enough healthy squad for the upcoming fixtures in what could prove a pivotal time for Rovers to secure safety.
"We've got a little knock on Ryan Nelsen's knee a couple of weeks ago he had some fluid drained off of that and he was feeling it a little bit, it was a little bit painful so we had to bring him off," he continued.
"Samba battled on but he's got a swollen ankle, Junior Hoilett's feeling a tight hamstring and Roque Santa Cruz on Thursday was feeling a tight hamstring - we took him off as a precaution before he suffered anything more substantial."
